On October 10, 2019, fitting in with the Halloween season, the Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) Infrastructure and Software, Engineering, and Life Cycle (SEAL) teams bid farewell to legacy platform Eureka, the oldest-running Virtual Server doing transactional work on behalf of the University (outside of the Mainframe and BARC systems).

According to Kirk Grier, Director, ETS Infrastructure, it began production in 2004 with 1,032 days of continuous uptime as of its last day. Since its inception, Greg West, Information Technology lead, expanded its business role in inter-financial business transactions. Then, he guided Eureka's processes' migration to GoAnywhere and other mechanisms to enable its long-overdue retirement.

"The end of an era. It's fitting that Greg pulls the plug," Grier said. "Here's to celebrating what we can turn off. While we often focus on bringing new systems online, retiring older systems - with their inherent security risks, unsupported operating systems and applications - is equally important. Greg’s efforts have helped us make great progress here.”
