Campus accepted version of the UCSB Communications Infrastructure Standards

This is a PDF of the document (with final formatting and text changes) as approved by the ITPG and ITB membership based on the March 15, 2010 edition with revisions.  This document was accepted by the ITPG and the ITP for use on the campus.

VPN Server Update

After various tests and considering options, Windows-based VPN users will also be migrated over to the OpenVPN-based VPN server. Installation instructions and required files have been posted to https://ftp.ucsb.edu/private/secured/vpn/ovpn/win/. This has only been tested on virtual machines running XP/Vista64/Win7, so more real-world testing is needed.

VPN Server Update

The MacOS VPN client appears to be working properly, with multiple users successfully connecting to the VPN server. Testing of a Windows client began late Tuesday afternoon, with some success on XP, Vista, and Windows 7. One oddity observed on Windows 7 is an erroneous message indicating a newer client is available; this is being checked.

VPN Service Problems

Users of the campus VPN service began experiencing connectivity problems on Sunday, Sept. 19. The problem is due to a necessary change in the SSL certificate used to secure the initial connection to the server. An alternative server had been under development, and MacOS users may find a replacement VPN client and installation instructions at https://ftp.ucsb.edu/private/secured/vpn/ovpn/mac/. A replacement Windows client will likely be available later today, Tuesday, Sept.
