Understanding how privacy is safeguarded through the implementation of new cybersecurity technologies.

As the cybersecurity landscape changes, organizations are transitioning from traditional VPNs to a modern Zero Trust Architecture, and questions regarding user privacy are natural.

The deployment of these technologies does not supersede the UC Statement of Privacy Values, nor does it diminish the importance UCSB places on our commitment to intellectual and academic freedom, as outlined on the university’s privacy website. Those commitments are balanced against the values of transparency and accountability, which are required of UCSB as a public institution.

Enrolling a University-owned device in the required cybersecurity services does not grant access to local (personal or UCSB-related) files, emails, browsing history, or any other standard, activity-related information. Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) collects only the relevant information to determine whether a device is being compromised or is otherwise vulnerable to cyber threats.

UCOP Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) FAQs

The implementation of Zscaler tools are designed with a privacy-by-design philosophy. Their primary function is securing private UCSB data, research and resources, not monitoring our community’s personal browsing, usage of devices or data.
