As noted by the Executive Vice Chancellor and mandated by The UC Office of the President, meeting critical cybersecurity goals is a priority for UCSB in 2025.

There are two key things every active employee (excluding faculty emeriti) of UC Santa Barbara must do to ensure President Drake’s objective of 100% compliance:

 1. If you are overdue, take Cybersecurity Awareness training as soon as possible

  • All faculty, staff and student employees must complete cybersecurity awareness training by April 30, 2025.
  • Click here to access the training, or log in to the UC Learning Center to check your status.
  • Users who have not completed training will begin receiving notifications starting March 31, 2025.
  • Non-compliant users will also receive browser warnings when logging into SSO 14 days prior to the deadline.
  • After the deadline, non-compliant users will be redirected to the UC Learning Center when attempting to login.
  • Users who do not complete their training by April 30, 2025 will lose access to UCSB resources including email, Zoom, and Canvas until they have completed it.

 2. Work with your local IT leads to update your UCSB-owned devices

  • As part of the mandate, all UCSB-owned devices must have Trellix, a cybersecurity software provided by the university, installed. This is necessary to protect the networks these devices are connected to, and to protect the sensitive data accessible through those networks.
    • In the next few weeks, users will start hearing from local IT leads with specific information about how they can install the required device management software on their devices
    • In the meantime, users should account for all UCSB-owned devices in their possession. A UCSB-owned device is any device purchased directly or indirectly with university funds, including through grants or startup funds. These devices may include:
      • Desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and mobile phones provided by the university.
      • Devices in shared lab space and inactive devices.
    • User experience installing the software will vary, depending on how your local IT unit decides to deploy it. Some may elect to have updates done remotely and automatically. Others may be asked to manually download the required software, or may need to schedule a time to complete the update in-person.
    • Please follow the instructions provided by your IT leads, and work closely with them to bring all of your devices into compliance.

Privacy is an important consideration, and no tool installed on your UCSB device will collect your information. As a reminder, UCSB protected data classified as ‘P4’ should never be saved to a personal or UCSB endpoint device. Learn more about protected data classifications here.

The Secure UCSB project has tackled some of the more frequent questions on our webpage, and we’re also available through email at secure-ucsb@it.ucsb.edu.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to achieve full compliance on this ambitious project by May 2025.
