UC Santa Barbara Enterprise Technology Services and UC Santa Barbara Public Affairs & Communications have partnered to publish guidelines for the assignment of new top-level subdomains under the ucsb.edu domain. Internal subdomains are represented as subdomain.ucsb.edu — for example, engineering.ucsb.edu, socialsciences.ucsb.edu, music.ucsb.edu, etc.
If you are in a position to request a new top-level subdomain on behalf of your area now or in the future, please review the guidelines at it.ucsb.edu/websites/subdomain-guidelines-and-requests.
The guidelines are intended to help university staff and faculty members choose good top-level subdomain names that will be intuitive for our website visitors, align with institutional goals, be consistent with the university’s identity and branding, and be meaningful and sustainable over time.
In addition to the newly published guidelines, a corresponding request form has been created in the IT ServiceNow catalog. Going forward, you must place requests for new top-level subdomains through this form — meaning you should no longer send requests directly to hostmaster@ucsb.edu. The link to the form is accessible at the bottom of the guidelines page. Through this process, requests for subdomain names will route to Public Affairs & Communications for approval and/or discussion. Following approval, the Network Operations Center (NOC) will create/assign the DNS entry per existing processes.
Please note: If you do plan to request a new subdomain at any time, consult with your local IT staff prior to placing the request. This will help to ensure that key technical requirements are considered, and can pave the way for a smoother implementation process.
There will be no changes required to existing subdomains. This is only for new subdomains going forward. Direct any questions about top-level subdomains guidelines or the corresponding request process to alex.parraga@ucsb.edu.
