RE: Update on Core Router Replacement Project
In January, Networking, Communications & Security Services announced the Core Router Replacement Project. We expected to complete work in late April, but soon after our announcement, technical issues arose that delayed the project and required a different implementation plan.
We continue our technical investigative work to prepare for the installation of the 10 new core routers. Once we’ve completed the installation of the new core routers, work will continue to streamline and reduce VLAN complexity in our network.
I’ve included the tentative core router replacement schedule, below, from May to mid-July 2020. This schedule is subject to change. We expect work to require three to six hours overnight. We don’t expect outages during work or class times, but we could experience impacts elsewhere on campus.
The physical core router replacement will affect the locations below on the following tentative dates:
May 19, 1-6:30 a.m.
Move campus Internet and UTM Traffic to the new core infrastructure. This work will cause the campus network to be unavailable during this time.
May 26, 3-6 a.m.
Noble Hall 544 - Move building connections jumpers from the old core to the new core network.
June 16, 3-6 a.m.
Harold Frank Hall 556 - Rack the new router and move building connections jumpers from old core to the new core network.
June 18, 3-6 a.m.
North Hall 535 - Rack the new core and move building connections jumpers from the old core to the new core network.
June 23, 3-6 a.m.
HSSB 515 - Rack router and move building connections.
June 30, 3-6 a.m.
Physical Sciences North 657 - Rack router and move building connections.
July 7, 3-6 a.m.
Public Safety 574 - Move building connections jumpers from the old core to the new core network.
July 14, daytime
Portola 1861 - install a new router to provide enhanced service to West Campus. No outage will occur.
July 20, 12-4 a.m.
Migrate an internal routed interface. No outage expected to occur.
July 23, 12-4 a.m.
Migrate an internal routed interface. The campus wireless network will experience service disruptions.
July 29, 12-5 a.m.
Migrate an internal routed interface. Plan for a network outage during this time.
August 3, 12-6 a.m.
Change route path prioritization, VLAN migration, install new code for testing. Network disruption is expected to be less than five minutes per task, if not entirely non-disruptive.
August 10, 12-5 a.m.
Multiple disruptions of up to five minutes as we update individual cores.
August 13, 12-5 a.m.
Multiple disruptions of up to five minutes as we update individual cores.
August 20, 12-8 a.m.
Full campus internet outage scheduled.
Updates will be sent beforehand via the D-list, at it.ucsb.edu, status.ucsb.edu, and at the UCSB IT LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter pages when work will occur and its potential impacts. Please note that you can subscribe status.ucsb.edu to receive notices of service-impacting events at UCSB.
The new core routers, part of UCSB’s Next Generation Network program to invest in the campus data network infrastructure, will enable intra-core connections at 100 gigabytes and building connections up to 25 gigabytes. This will create a more robust and reliable campus network that allows for higher internal traffic processing.
